Did I EVER say the deep south in the 60's wasn't made up of Democrats? But it's exactly those southern Democrats that came over to the GOP after LBJ (yes, that Democrat) signed the Civil Rights voting act in 1964. The deep south, and its most racist elements, have been in the GOP camp ever since.

My point about Selma was not about Dems v.REps., but about the fact that sometimes protest is not only worthy, but essential, when serious civil rights violations are the norm. There's a huge difference between PETA protesters, for example, spending their time chucking red paint on people wearing furs, and protesters who literally put their lives at risk (as in the 60's) to right wrongs as egregious as the Jim Crow laws that permeated the south.

Don't forget that the grandfather of the modern conservative movement, Barry Goldwater, said himself in his waning years that he no longer recognized the Republican Party he loved because it had been hijacked by religious zealots who didn't understand the values he revered: limited government (which included social libertarianism) and sound fiscal policies that kept money in the national coffers, rather than running the debt into trillions, as the Bush administration has done, ensuring that my grandchildren will be paying off his massive debt from a war he started based on a lie.

It's not just Bush the Lesser, all the Republicans from Nixon on that preached one way while doing massive spending. Maybe Nixon was the most honest because at least he said ~ we're all Keynsians now~, referring to deficit spending.

Instead of straight talkers, Republicans mostly prefer to be rank deceivers. Even now the Bushites want to fleece America by forcing a buyout that's actually a giveaway. People wonder why poor folk want to get something for nothing -- well that's the American way now.
